I sleep in over-ear headphones or a headband
An earbud is a small hard point inside the ear. An over-ear cup is a rigid ring AROUND it, several times wider, and it cannot deform at all. Instead of the surface needing to displace around a stem, the whole cup has to be accommodated — which effectively adds its full depth to your head. A headband speaker is the opposite case: flat, compressible, and closer to wearing nothing.
Nothing here concerns hearing or listening volume, which is a question for an audiologist.
What the pillow has to do
- contact removal preferred — An opening or cut-out that removes contact outright, rather than spreading the load. The right answer when the object cannot compress and the tissue under it is the problem — a healing piercing, or a mask frame that has nowhere else to go.
- conforming top layer — A surface able to displace further than the object protrudes — typically a dual-density build with a soft top over a supportive base.
- loft in measured range — Pillow loft within the range your own measurement implies. This is first for every constraint in this cluster, because no surface is soft enough to rescue a pillow your head has already flattened.
