I have to hug a second pillow to sleep
Hugging props the upper arm and stops the top shoulder rolling forward, which takes rotation out of the spine and load off the bottom shoulder. It is doing a real mechanical job and it is not a head-height job at all — which is why it does not fix a wrong loft, and why people who do it can still wake with a sore neck.
What the pillow has to do
- loft in measured range — Pillow loft within the range your own measurement implies. This is first for every constraint in this cluster, because no surface is soft enough to rescue a pillow your head has already flattened.
