I sleep with my hand under my cheek
A hand under the cheek is roughly an inch and a half of extra height, applied exactly where the gap is largest. It is the same correction as folding the pillow, made with the only object always within reach. The cost is that your arm is now compressed under your own head for hours.
Persistent numbness or tingling in an arm is a question for a clinician, not a pillow index. This page describes only height.
What the pillow has to do
- loft in measured range — Pillow loft within the range your own measurement implies. This is first for every constraint in this cluster, because no surface is soft enough to rescue a pillow your head has already flattened.
